NEW! Speed Profiles Reveals True Picture of Traffic in U.S. National Parks
The latest TomTom study revealed average speeds of vehicles travelling through National Parks, based on anonymous user-shared data from park visitors using TomTom navigation devices. The findings indicate that the National Parks are not as congested as they are often depicted. Of the nearly 8,200 total miles of navigable roads within the National Parks, only about 0.1% of all roadways experienced any regularly occurring traffic within the park.
Speed Profiles road speed information and mileage for the top 10 most visited parks and lists of which parks have the highest and lowest average speeds are outlined here. (pdf)
World Cup Soccer
With World Cup Soccer on the horizon, digital maps and dynamic content leader Tele Atlas released a World Cup Soccer-ready digital map of South Africa. This includes the latest road networks in South Africa, Lesotho and Swaziland, as well as detail for all nine host cities. It’s the map fans need to find everything they want, from restaurants, hotels and bars to the fastest routes around regulated traffic zones.
More that 50 Tele Atlas 3D Landmarks are also available for South Africa for developers to include to create applications that match what users actually see in their surroundings, helping them more easily find locations and services, including: Loftus Versfeld Stadium, Voortrekkersmonument
Speed Profiles Reveals the Most Polluted Roads in the United States
TomTom’s Latest Traffic Study leverages data from GPS users to reveal a detailed view of the environmental and economic impact of carbon emissions from traffic jams on nation’s primary and secondary roads. The top 20 most polluted roads, the associated costs of that pollution in terms of tons of carbon emission produced and additional fuel wasted are outlined here:

Tele Atlas Community Input News
In December, Tele Atlas launched the latest version of MultiNet. Thanks to community input, Tele Atlas leveraged anonymous GPS measurements from portable navigation devices users in combination with other sources and processes to produce significant realignment of road network geometry. In this example of Germany’s major freeway network, the green lines indicate realignments in the road geometry in a recent Tele Atlas database release; most of the realignments involved shifts of a few feet. In this photo of a roadway segment in Germany, the blue lines represent the geometry in Tele Atlas’ previous database; the orange lines represent the realigned geometry in the Tele Atlas database, based on the GPS measurements shared by portable navigation device users.
Notably, Tele Atlas has also used community input to help generate new road geometry. A previous version of Tele Atlas' database included 12,000 kilometers or roads in Romania. Thanks to community input, the database now contains more than 18,000 additional kilometers of roads, helping to very quickly make the map of the country more complete.
